It is with great sadness that we wish to inform you that Professor Basil Hiley passed
away peacefully on Saturday the 25th of January at the age of 89.
He will be remembered by many as a great physicist, one who was always willing to
follow his intuition while backing up his ideas with a phenomenal knowledge and
insight in to physics. He was also a hugely generous person, keen to share his ideas
and collaborate with many of us in the department - young and old alike.
In January 2025, UCL's President and Provost, Dr Michael Spence, visited CERN,
alongside a UCL delegation for an in-depth look at some of the world's most groundbreaking scientific advancements,
and to explore opportunities for strengthening the UCL-CERN collaborations.
New results from the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) collaboration involving UCL researchers have put the best-ever limits on weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), a leading candidate for what makes up our universe’s invisible mass.
